Another way to think about this is that these First Americans were hunters and gatherers without a place of their own, and followed a herd of bison or wholly mammoths across the land bridge not knowing they were entering a new and unpeopled land. Or as you say, conditions were bad and they had to move to find new game or get away from severe weather, or escape from invaders. Also perhaps humans are just explorers and it was time for them to move on.

This was a really fascinating read. It makes me wonder what drove those earlier humans to undergo such an arduous journey. Crossing such a vast area without knowing if you'll find the resources to survive can't help but make me think that perhaps their 'homeland' was in such bad shape that they had no choice but to move. When there is abundance, it doesn't seem likely that you would move or even consider a journey across a glacier (if that is what happened). Regardless, this gave me some food for thought. Thank you.
Thoroughly engrossing read for an old history major who once upon a time lived in the Pacific Northwest. I had the impression that the land bridge explanation was the primary theory of human migration to the Americas, but clearly there are other theories. I’ll have to learn more about these. Human migration, from prehistory to present, intrigues me - the forces that motivate peoples to move onward from homelands have not really changed.
