Welcome to the monthly edition of The Archaeo Jarlig. I have some fascinating stories from the world of history and archaeology to share with you.

What is your impression of “Europe” before the Indo-European migrations shaped Europe’s identity? Was it a peaceful farming paradise? Or were there sporadic scenes of violence?

The influential archaeologist Marija Gimbutas was renowned for proposing the idea that Neolithic Europe was a peaceful, matriarchal paradise, and violence was introduced during the Bronze Age Indo-European migrations, which shaped the identity of European civilizations.

Gimbutas’ theory gained popularity among the archaeological community in the 1980s and 1990s, and the general public also came to accept her ideas. However, discoveries from the past decade or so have challenged the perception of a peaceful Neolithic Europe.
